“Darkwad” is a term many Burners use to refer to folks who aren’t lit up, making them invisible on dark nights. It’s a bit of a mixed term: there’s a dash of Burner snark in there for folks not bothering to put on lights. But if someone calls you a Darkwad, it’s because they want you to stay safe!
At What If, we don’t have as many art cars as at Burning Man, but we still have people on gators and bikes who are moving at a fast 8KM at an hour, and pedestrian collisions can happen, too!
Individuals walking around, bikes, and any motorized movement devices need to have some type of light on them (visible from front and back!) so that no one gets hit.
To help everyone remember to light up, here’s a handy earworm tune
written by our rad Culture Committee member Tamara Mataya.
Sung to the tune of Stayin’ Alive***
“Well you can tell by the way I lit my frock
I’m a night Burner–not a ‘Darkwad’
When music’s loud on a large site
It’s hard to find your friends at night
But it’s alright, it’s okay
You’ll glow up another way
Acculturate to understand
We don’t just ‘light up’ The Man!
LED Shimmer, glow-in-the-dark glimmer got you
Stayin’ alight, stayin’ alight
EL wire lit ya, that art car didn’t hit ya
Cuz you’re stayin’ alight, stayin alight
Don’t be a Darkwad
Stay alight! Stay alight!
Show up at night
Stay aliiiiiiiiiiight… “
We look forward to hearing you singing this song and it echoing through the valley in just one short week!!
